Toshiba may buy Landis & Gyr

According to Bloomberg, Toshiba is the front-runner to buy Landis & Gyr, the Swiss smart-meter specialist.

The proposed purchase price is thought to be over $2 billion.

Other bidders are said to have been Siemens, ABB, GE and private equity firms TPG and EQT .

Toshiba is very much involved in the smart metering business, and is currently building smart grids in Tokyo and New Mexico.
